20mm Gun (Hispano)

20mm Gun (Hispano)

The 20mm Hispano Gun was a rapid-firing automatic anti-aircraft weapon widely used by naval forces during the mid-20th century. Designed to engage low-flying aircraft and fast-moving aerial threats, it became an important component of shipboard defense systems.

This 20 mm calibre gun was fitted aboard the erstwhile Giri-class ships of the Indian Navy. Renowned for its reliability and high rate of fire, the weapon could fire approximately 600 rounds per minute, enabling it to create an effective defensive barrier against enemy aircraft.

Originally developed from the famous Hispano-Suiza series of autocannons, the gun was versatile enough to be mounted not only on naval vessels but also on military aircraft. Its powerful ammunition and rapid firing capability made it one of the most effective light anti-aircraft weapons of its era.

On naval ships, the Hispano gun served as a close-range defensive weapon, protecting vessels from air attacks and supporting fleet operations. Its compact size, ease of operation, and combat effectiveness ensured its widespread adoption by many navies around the world.

Today, the 20mm Hispano Gun stands as an important example of naval weapon technology, illustrating the evolution of shipborne air-defense systems and the measures taken to safeguard naval assets from aerial threats.
